We learned a lot
from making the
first season of
Codename: Kids Next Door
from making the
first season of
Codename: Kids Next Door
We knew the characters better.
We knew what kind of story
was best for each storyboard artist.
We knew we had a gihoogic world to explore.
Visually,
the character's line weight got thinner.
The backgrounds got more elaborate.
And the 2x4 tech got more intricate.
In season one I insisted that there
be no stories
about
SCHOOL
and no stories about
HOME.
But for season two we wanted a
theme to work around.
So we decided to explore
FAMILY.
We met:
CREE
MONTY UNO
and
HOAGIE'S GRANDMA
and saw a bit
of where the KND lived
when not in the
Treehouse
or on a mission.
But here,
for your perusal,
is an original storyboard page
from each episode of the
first half of
first half of
season two:

14A: Operation: POP
Writer: Mr. Warburton
Storyboard: Matt Peters
First appearance of
MR. FIZZ
Fun Fact:
While voice actor Jeff Bennet was recording
dialogue for Mr. Boss during first season,
he absent-mindedly started doing
impression.
I immediately knew we had to use that for
SOMETHING
down the line.

14b: Operation: CATS
Writer: Mr. Warburton
Storyboard: Kim Arndt
First appearance of
CRAZY OLD CAT LADY
Fun Fact:
If there's a story with cats,
you give it to Kim Arndt.
No, seriously.
You give it to Kim Arndt.

15A: Operation: SPANK
Writer: Mr. Warburton
Storyboard: Maurice Fontenot
Fun Fact:
Count Spankulot
was originally called
Count Spankula
but an internet search for that name
brought up some
VERY
VERY
not safe for kids stuff.

15B: Operation: DATE
Writer: Mo Willems
Storyboard: Guy Moore
Fun Fact:
Numbuh Three and Four's
dance sequence
made many a shipper's
life complete.

16A: Operation: SUPPORT
Writer: Mr. Warburton
Storyboard: Kim Arndt
First appearance of
CREE
and
MR. LINCOLN
Fun Fact:
I think this was the first episode I was
really and truly proud of writing.
It was funny, racy,
action-packed and
showed the boys as silly, naive kids.
Everything I wanted the show to be!
Shockingly,
Cartoon Network had virtually
NO NOTES
regarding a story about boys wearing bras.

16A: Operation: TAPIOCA
Writer: Mo Willems
Storyboard: Matt Peters
First appearance of
HOAGIE'S GRANDMA
and
THE SENIOR CITIZEN SQUAD
Fun Fact:
Numbuh Two's bad puns...
Funny old people...
A giant robot...
This episode was tailor made for
Matt Peters.

17A: Operation: MOVIE
Writer: Mr. Warburton
Storyboard: Maurice Fontenot
Fun Fact:
After only a season and a quarter we didn't have
nearly enough villains to fill a theatre.
So the design department
turned many of the crew into villains.
I'm in the top right corner
(aka Nogoodnik)
next to
character designer Kevin Kobasic
(aka The Big Idea)
with Mo on the other side looking kind of

17B: Operation: FAST-FOOD
Writer: Mo Willems
Storyboard: Guy Moore
Fun Fact:
We often made life difficult for our
overseas animation studio,
by designing ships like the
C.A.S.U.A.L.
Designs like that are hard to rotate in
traditional hand-drawn animation.
These days it would be built as a
3-D model and rotated with ease!

18A: Operation: OOMP-PAH
Writer: Mr. Warburton
Storyboard: Kim Arndt
First appearance of
MONTY UNO
Fun Fact:
This episode happened because
I wanted to re-create
WITH TUBAS!
I have no idea why.
_____________________________________________
18B: Operation: SHAVE
Writer: Mr. Warburton
Storyboard: Matt Peters
Fun Fact:
For this episode's story pitch I actually rough boarded
out the opening raid sequence and played the beginning of
to set the mood.
_______________________________________________
19A: Operation: FLAVOR
Writer: Mr. Warburton
Storyboard: Guy Moore
Fun Fact:
I think the fan favorite choice for the
Fourth Flavor
is
banana.
But the core idea is that it's a flavor you've
NEVER EVER TASTED.
Like,
imagine a
COLOR
that no one has never ever seen.
In other news,
Guy Moore absolutely KILLED
this storyboard.
Still one of his best.

19B: Operation: KISS
Writer: Mo Willems
Storyboard: Maurice Fontenot
First appearance of
Joaquin
Fun Fact:
Teenage Hoagie totally broke the fan-girl internet
after this episode aired!
Oh, the fan-art and fanfics!
_____________________________________________
20A: Operation: GHOST
Writer: Mr. Warburton
Storyboard: Kim Arndt
(with Jesse Schmal)
Fun Fact:
As I mentioned
HERE,
we had to un-scarify this episode a couple times.
But we also had to tone down the opening
since it was all about the actual death
of a hamster.

And that's part 1
of Season Two.
Check back next week for
part 2.

I enjoy looking at these story boards and reading the facts about them, it's so much fun for me. I can't believe Spankulot's orginal name was causing trouble. Can't wait to read more!
You know how some things are just perfectly timed? Well, I was listening to the Weird Al song "Perform this way", and he said pop, right as I read the title "Operation: P.O.P.".
I know I've said this (or something similar) already, but it's really fascinating to see these storyboard pages and to learn some things I didn't know before about how the KND episodes came about. I eagerly anticipate seeing the rest of these. :D
I actually died laughing when you said that Hoagie broke the fangirl internet after Op. KISS cause that is way too true xD and Mr. W, you read the fanfics? If so, I am so sorry cause admittedly, a lot of those were written by me xD
The fangirl Internet is still broken! Teenage Hoagie was one of the first KND characters I ever drew :) Thank you so much for sharing these! It's so interesting to read little facts about each episode and a sample of the storyboards. :)
