After
Codename: Kids Next Door
was done,
I made it a point to save
ONE ORIGINAL PAGE
from
each and every
storyboard.
Numbuh 440
(Alison Wilgus)
did a great job of going through
all the boards to find the perfect page
that embodied each episode.
After stumbling upon these in the
I thought they'd be a fun thing
to post as
the weeks go by.
So let's start with the first half of
SEASON ONE,
shall we?
_________________________________________________________________________________
001: Operation: CAKED
Writer: Mr. Warburton
Storyboard: Maurice Fontenot
First appearance of
The Delightful Children From Down The Lane
and
Big Badolescent
Fun Fact:
Since the KND pilot was 7 minutes long,
Cartoon Network needed two more 7 minute shorts
to fill the half hour
(most shows are 20-22 minutes worth of show and the rest is commercials)
So CAKED aired with
NO P IN THE OOL
and my other pilot
KENNY AND THE CHIMP

2A: Operation: NO-POWUH
Writer: Mr. Warburton
Storyboard: Kim Arndt
First appearance of
THE TOILETNATOR,
GRAMMA STUFFUM
and
TREEHOUSE HAMSTERS
Fun Fact:
Animator Pat Smith
told me that I should hire Kim Arndt
or die trying.
Now I tell everyone else the same thing.

2B: Operation: TEETH
Writer: Mo Willems
Storyboard: Joe St. Pierre
First appearance of
KNIGHTBRACE
Fun Fact:
To give Knightbrace extra nightbracey effects
voice actor Tom Kenny hooked one finger into his mouth while
recording his lines.
_________________________________________________________________________________
Writer: Mr. Warburton
Storyboard: Bob Suarez
First appearance of
Count Spankulot
and the
Proper Patrol
Fun Fact:
This episode was originally called BIG-ELBOW
and was based on how my brothers and I would

3B: Operation: I-SCREAM
Writer: Mr. Warburton
Storyboard: Matt Peters
First appearance of
The Ice Cream Men
Fun Fact:
This was the first episode of the
series to hit the airwaves
(along with CANNON)
I still get chills when that ice cream cone drill comes
thisclose
to Numbuh One's head.

4A: Operation: TURNIP
Writer: Rob Leighton
Storyboard: Guy Moore
Fun Fact:
After seeing a sooper cinematic
gag storyboard Mr. Moore
had drawn of the cast of Sheep In The Big City
dying in a horrible plane accident
I knew he'd be perfect for KND.
He later became a director and was responsible for
pre-boarding ALL of Operation: ZERO!

4B: Operation: PIRATE
Writer: Rob Leighton
Storyboard: Tom Connor
First appearance of
Stickybeard
Fun Fact:
Mark Hamill once told me that while
visiting his sister for the holidays
he found his nieces and nephews watching KND.
When he told them he was Stickybeard they made him
speak in that voice for the entire weekend.

5A: Operation: MINIGOLF
Writer: Mo Willems
Storyboard: Maurice Fontenot
First appearance of
The Great Puttinski
Fun Fact:
Perhaps you caught the references to
in this episode?
________________________________________________________________________________
5B: Operation: COWGIRL
Writer: Tom Eaton
Storyboard: Tony Eastman
First appearance of
Lasso Lass
and
first series appearance of
Mr. Wink and Mr. Fibb
Fun Fact:
There's a slight resemblance between
Wink and Fibb
and

6A: Operation: OFFICE
Writer: Mo Willems
Storyboard: Kim Arndt
First appearance of
Mr. Boss,
Rainbow Monkeys
and
Numbuh Four's Dad
Fun Fact:
The first draft of the script had toys called
Rainbow Puppies.
But the legal dept told us that name was already taken.
So was Rainbow Kitties
and a bunch of others.
But somehow
Rainbow Monkeys
was free.
The rest is rainbow history!

6B: Operation: ARCTIC
Writer: Mr. Warburton
Storyboard: David Wachtenheim
First appearance of
Professor Triple Extra Large
(actually, he was in Kenny and the Chimp first)
and
Numbuh 30C
Fun Fact:
During the storyboard pitch I was politely informed that
Arctic Operative Numbuh 30C's name
didn't make sense since 30 Celsius is actually rather warm.
I felt dumb until I informed them that
OF COURSE it didn't work--
because Numbuh 30C
is an
IMPOSTER.
Duh!

7A: Operation: LICE
Writer: Rob Leighton
Storyboard: Matt Peters
First
(and only)
appearance of
Sir Toasty
Fun Fact:
This was the first episode where we got to see just
how vast the Treehouse is.
I mean, there's a Nacho Cheese Repository.

And that's it for
the first half!
Keep it locked here
for the second half of
Season One
next week!
