SKETCHBOOK COVERS THROUGH THE AGES
(part 2: apres college and the KND years)

If you liked part one
of my
SKETCHBOOK COVERS THROUGH THE AGES
post then
THROW YER HANDS AYER!

Thank you.

So let's check out
the covers of my
sketchbooks
after I got out of college.

But here's the thing.
When I started working in animation in 1990,
I didn't really draw in sketchbooks anymore.

I was so busy drawing for work,
and doing freelance at night
that I barely doodled for doodle sake.

There were only a couple in
almost a decade!

I did a post of this next one over

But then doodles started happening again
(I did a post about this red one over HERE):

But when writing for
Codename: Kids  Next Door
I started doodling less and wording more
It started in these
dumb notebooks.
We talked about this next one over

These books contained mostly
writing with a smattering of ball point pen
drawings.

But eventually I started using real
sketchbooks again:

Have a peek inside of this next one

This sketchbook finished as we were winding down
production on KND.
It's filled with all sorts of melancholy
 musing on the show:

Want more?

No?

Well, forget you.
There's more coming next post!

SKETCHBOOK COVERS THROUGH THE AGES
(part 1: the early years)

I've filled a lot of sketchbooks over the years.

No... those aren't ALL sketchbooks.
But the second from the bottom shelf is
packed solid with 'em.
And so's half of the top shelf.

And that's not even including all my
sketchbooks from high school.
But I sank those deep into the Mariana Trench
so no one has to suffer looking through them.
Blech!

Anyway...
half the fun of a
sketchbook is
decorating the cover with
stickers and junk.

Sooper pal
believes that you should draw
in your sketchbook first
BEFORE
putting stickers on it.
But he's
LYING!

Ya gotta put stickers on it
FIRST!

So here,
for your enjoyment,
are the covers from my
college days:

My aunt gave me a big packet of
military aircraft stickers,
many of which ended up on sketchbooks
over the years:

I worked at Video Magic for a couple summers
transferring Super 8 films to VHS:

Video Magic was next door to
an advertising agency.
I have no idea why I found it interesting
to put their sticker on a sketchbook:

Not sure where the cover to this one went,
but I used to send silly letters to companies
and celebrities under the pseudonym
Frank Pierce.
Inspired by Don Novello's
I liked seeing what kind of responses I'd get to
ridiculous questions and or accusations.
I don't remember what I sent to
Oscar Meyer,
but they sent me free recipes:

Don't worry!
There are lots more sketchbook
covers coming
in part two!

HAPPY 20th, LISA SALAMONE

While we were celebrating
Disney Television Animation's
30th anniversary
we were also celebrating
the 20th anniversary of our
Sooper Powered
Senior Vice President
Head of Production
Lisa Salamone.

And to show how much we love her
all the executive producers
got together and drew
a picture of her.

Craig McCracken
Alex Hirsch
Dan Povenmire
Daron Nefcy
Paul Rudish
Noah Z Jones
and a metric ton more of
dangerously talented artists
participated.

I did, too:

Here's a closer view:

Congrats on your 20th, Lisa!
You rule the universe!

SILVER DRAWING ACADEMY DE OSHIETA

If you heard rumours of
poorly spoken
Japanese going on in the
Southern California area...

That was totally me.

See,
I got invited to
talk to a bunch of
Japanese students at the
SILVER DRAWING ACADEMY

You know
sooper famous
character designer
even if you think you don't.

He designed
Kim Possible:

Clerks: The Animated Series

And Danny Phantom:

And now he's opened up
his own drawing school
in Los Angeles!

It's a great space
with lots of great artwork:

Stephen had over 150 animation students
from Japan come
for a class.

He took the majority of them to discuss character design
while I talked to the rest about
career paths, writing, direction
and that kind of stuff.

While I can speak some Japanese,
I'm not fluent enough to lecture,
so I had the help of a wonderful interpreter.

Hopefully she made me sound smart!
