OH, SAY CAN YOU CTN-X?

Yeah, I saw it.

And I'd like to say I rocked it...

But this year I was only able to attend for one day.

So I semi-rocked it.

I'm talking about the second annual
Creative Talent Network Animation Expo, of course.
Perhaps you remember me harping on about how fun it was last year over HERE?

And for all intents and purposes it looked like its awesomosity levels were equally off the charts this year. But I can't really prove it. I only got to go to one panel called SMALL SCREEN WONDERS which was about TV animation.

I mainly went to heckle Maxwell Atoms, but it was interesting to hear Mark McCorkle (Kim Possible, Penguins of Madagascar), Pendleton Ward (Adventure Time), Sandro Corsaro (Kick Buttowski) and Rodney Barnes (The Boondocks) talk about their adventures in TV animation.

After that, me and Mr. Atoms wandered the floor to check out the artists selling their wares.

Storyboard sooper genius Sherm Cohen was hawking his 10 DVD set, Storyboard Secrets to a curious public. And while I haven't seen the videos, I HAVE seen the man do butt-kicking work since he's one of the Fish Hooks crew! In fact, if you watch the show, you might recognize Sherm as the face of Bud, the guy in the pet store at the beginning of each episode:

You and I could learn a TON from this guy (Sherm, not Bud). Hit up his blog for more info over HERE.

As I meandered around, I bought this adorable squid from Blue Sky character designer Marceline Tanguay:

You tell me where else you can get a beautiful drawing of a cephalopod so beautifully framed.

I had to stop by and see Phil Rynda-- he who designs characters and makes those awesome title cards for Adventure Time. He was selling art and handing out his latest comic:

And while at his table I TOTALLY mugged Adventure Time creator Penn Ward and made him draw in my sketchbook.
And then had Mr. Rynda join in...
And then fellow Adventure Time designer Andy Ristaino got involved.
The result was this:

And as you can see, the result was... how do the kids say, awesomesauce?

And speaking of amazing, check out this sketch Pascal Campion did for me.

I can't shout loud enough about how much I love this guy's work. His line. His sense of color. The mood he sets. I literally swoon when he posts his daily "warm up" drawings on Facebook. I should hate him... but he's too sooper triple nice.
So I'll just keep drooling over his paintings.

And then, check out this totally sooper cute sketch card by Louie Del Carmen. He's all sorts of rockin'.

Obviously, other stuff went down including chatting with the fine folks from Titmouse, some lunch time chat with character designer Chris Battle, and getting to watch a live drawing demonstration by one of my mega-favorite illustrators Tadahiro Uesugi.

Phew... and that's a taste of what I did in just a couple hours.
Can you imagine all the awesomeness I would have witnessed if I had got to go every day?!

If you can make it next year, you gotta hit this event. It's getting bigggerer and betterer every year!

COMIC CON SKETCH #3

Allow me to introduce you to Derek Kirk Kim.

A while back, while working on KND, Numbuh 440 (aka Alison Wilgus) introduced me to a book called Same Difference and Other Stories by Mr. Kim.

And it was really fun! So I kept track of this guy, reading all his other stuff:

I especially love his online journal:

When I met Mr. Kirk Kim at Comic Con, I DID make it a point to cut a jab about how he rarely updates the journal.
He could have easily jabbed right back and said,

"Oh, I'm sorry I'm not updating to your satisfaction...
I was too busy winning an EISNER AWARD for this:

I think the kids say "OH, SNAP!" to kind of stuff.

And rightly so.
Derek Kirk Kim had JUST won the coveted award the night before!
But big award winner or not, I was gonna get this guy to draw me a pretty picture whether he liked it or not!
And here it is:

BOOM!

How ya like that?

Stick around for more tasty drawings sandwiched into my sketchbook!

COMIC CON SKETCH #2

Do you know Doug TenNapel?

First of all, he created one of the most funny, creative video games of all time:

I mean, even if he did nothing else in his life,
he created Professor Monkey For A Head:

That alone would have been enough for him to be ensconced in the Mr. Warburton pantheon of awesomeness for all eternity.

But no... Mr. TenNapel moved on from there.

He made a show on Nickelodeon called Catscratch:

And he rocked some awesome graphic novels:

What else has he done, you ask?

Well, as of Comic Con 2010, he's drawn in my sketchbook:

YAY!

COMIC CON SKETCH #1

So there I am, lurking around the Random House booth at Comic Con, making faces at Lunch Lady author/illustrator Jarrett Krosoczka while he's in the middle of a big meeting.

Eventually he finishes and while we're hanging out talking he introduces me to a young guy standing nearby. It kinda went like this:

Jarrett: Chris, this is Tom Warburton. He created The New Kids on the Block.

Me: Um... actually it's Codename: Kids Next Door.

Jarrett: That's what I said, The Kids in the Hall.

Me: No... Codename: Kids Next Door.

Chris: Did you say Codename: Kids Next Door?

Me: Uh huh.

Chris: Get out! That show totally saved me while I was on massively long book tours!

Me: Really? That's great! What were you touring for?

Then he pointed to a book on a nearby table:

Oh, that's nice---

What?!
What?!
WHAT?!

I was talking to none other than Christopher Paolini?!

And he's a KND fan?!
And a sooper nice guy to boot!

DUDE!

And as it turns out... me and a bunch of the KND crew were all reading Eragon while making the show. So the fanboy action was totally mutual!

And can you believe it? He actually beat me to the punch and asked me to draw something in HIS sketchbook. Of course I did... but not without getting him to rock this in mine:

Mr. Sulu... Awesomeness factor five.

Engage!

And stay tuned for more Comic Con sketches!

COMIC CON 2010

Well, I just got back from my first San Diego Comic Con as a native Californian!
To be honest, I had only attended once before-- around 4 years ago when Cartoon Network brought all their show creators out for a long weekend of nerdness. And while that first trip was one to remember, this one rocked pretty hard as well-- even thought I was only there for a day and a half.

I spent slot of time with these guys:

Uh huh...

It's that Dan Santat and Jarrett Krosoczka again.
And wherever those guys are...
These guys usually show up:

Si senor...

Bob Boyle and James Burks had a table and were hawking their wares to an adoring public.

And you know I had to hang out with Maxwell Atoms while was there, although I don't have any pictures of him. So I'll use this one from Comic Cons past:

I also got to spend some quality time with a lot of old friends and even made some new ones along the way!

Anyway... the Con (or The Annual Running Of The Nerds as Mr. Santat calls it) was awesome as always and included all the usual things that make it so great:

Stormtroopers:

Pikachus:

Sooper Fans:

Secret missions through the loading docks:

Awesome diaramas:

And animal feeding:

But you know what I like best about going to The Con?
Aw, you know me...

I just wanna get awesome artists to draw awesome pictures in my sketchbook.
And over the next couple posts I'll show you some of the pretty pictures some fine folks made for me.

So keep it locked here, would ya?
You don't wanna miss these puppies.
