MTV B WORLD I.D.

While browsing through my old journal  from 1992 I remembered an old MTV id  I worked on. Everybody loved the id's that ran  between the music videos on  MTV way back when. They were a hot steamy incubator for style and talent and created in every  conceivable technique. This one, called "B WORLD" was produced by a small company called Gorilla Animation (at least I THINK that's what they were called) I was an assistant animator on a good chunk of it, inbetweening and inking my heart out. It looks and sounds  incredibly dated now but it was pretty cool at the time. After B there are a whole bunch of  old MTV id's you should totally watch.

RANDOM ACTS OF BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD-NESS

There once was a time when I was the

production designer on the first season of

Beavis and Butthead.

I designed characters.

I designed props.

I animated the boys banging their heads and scratching their crotches.

Which was a privilege

because we actually animated the entire first season in-house at

J.J. Sedelmaier Productions

instead of shipping it overseas.

Therefore,

I made sure to keep a lot of rough animation art

that would have otherwise been lost to the trashcan.

Here's a random sampling:

That first season was kind of wild.

We knew we were working on something exciting

and it was incredible to have a front row seat to the show blowing up!

I'm glad I kept so much delicious art from such a talented crew!

A SKETCHBOOK FROM THE EARLY 90's

In the grand tradition of

trotting out an old sketchbook

to show you 

whilst

I slowly grind away at

my latest,

This pile of pulp started on 

May 28th, 1992

I was two years into my animation career

and sooper busy on the first season of 

Beavis and Butthead

at

J.J. Sedelmaier Productions:

smoked too much:

an old schooner at the

South Street Sea Port

in my free time:

Not sure who this guy was based on:

We always listened to Howard Stern at the studio,

so how surprised was I when

Mr. Sedelmaier brought

Gary Dell'abate

and

Stuttering John

in for a visit:

Back then

our good friend Lil

opened up a bar called 

The Coyote Ugly Saloon.

(Yeah... that one)

Me and my cronies could usually be found there

playing on the darts team.

Working the door.

Playing pinball.

Or just lounging about:

We did a Converse commercial

I used to wear big bear slippers around the studio.

When I'd take the elevator from the 3rd floor studio 

to the upstairs offices of JJSP

the the guys from the law offices in the building 

would look at me funny:

of a pool in the Hamptons...

WITH MY FACE:

Almost scraped off a nipple, too.

But it made for a lot of

good skechbook fodder:

I bought my first computer,

a Powerbook 520C!

160mb hard drive, yo!

And then on

September 17, 1994

(almost two and a 1/2 years later)

it was done:

Back then I was working crazy hours

and animating non-stop

so getting through a sketchbook took a lot longer.

I find it fascinating how much time 

I spent drawing myself back then.

I don't do that much these days.

That's the great thing about keeping these

sketchbook/journal/diary

thingies.

They're true time capsules.
