THE SIMPSONS vs PULP FICTION

Wha-wha-way 

back in 1994,

when I visited

Film Roman,

the studio that was making 

The Simpsons 

at the time,

I had quite the humbling experience.

But if there was

ONE GREAT THING

I took away from the experience,

it was the 

amazingly

hysterical

sooper-well-drawn

and sooper inappropriate

stack of xeroxed 

doodles the crew did of

scenes from

the recently released

PULP FICTION

using characters from

THE SIMPSONS!

WARNING!

There's some naughty language and 

inappropriate visuals 

because

Quentin Tarantino!

So you just

proceed at your own risk, okay?

SO GOOD!!!

There are even a couple more,

but they were a bit too racy for

warburtonlabs.

I love finding stuff like this

in the secret archives!

THE NATIONAL CARTOONISTS SOCIETY

Mo Willems

 is always yelling at me 

to join

The National Cartoonist Society.

And I 

TOTALLY

intend to.

But then I forget.

But I didn't forget to go to 

this get-together:

As promised,

there was some 

serious cartoon business

that needed to be taken care of.

Like voting in a new secretary.

And choosing a design for a 

NCS patch that would match everyone's plaid jacket,

as you can somewhat see in this horrendously 

blurry picture.

There was also a fun bit where assorted artists got up to show

the cartoon or illustration they first got paid for,

which led to some funny stories.

Especially NCS stalwart

Tom Gammill

who's always good for a laugh!

After assorted other secret business,

New Yorker cartoonist

Alex Gregory

got up to talk about his process

making cartoons for the

New Yorker.

I've been reading the New Yorker forever,

so it was fascinating hearing Mr. Gregory explain

how cartoons are made for the magazine.

Master of ceremonies

and fellow 

New Yorker cartoonist

Matthew Diffee

chimed in as well,

which rocked.

A GAGGLE OF GAG DRAWINGS

One of the signs of a healthy

animation studio

is the amount of 

gag drawings

being passed around.

Or it's a sign of a

miserable studio

filled with disgruntled artists

but either way

it makes for

plenty of funny doodles.

Most of the time

everyone is grinding out

caricatures of each other

in ridiculous situations.

Some of the first drawings 

I starred in were at 

Buzzco Associates.

As a lowly intern,

I got all the weird jobs.

Like having to search 

New York City 

for a

Casaba Melon

because we needed one for drawing reference.
